Best In Show!

Peak Boxes has won the first prize at the UK biggest festival of wildlife at their first attempt.

Peak Boxes make specialist bird boxes for swifts, owls and kestrels and their stand at Birdfair was not only awarded Best Commercial Stand but also Best in Show from more than 500 other displays by conservations groups, equipment suppliers and birdwatching tourism providers.

Although Lester and Lynden Hartmann of Peak Boxes have been working in the joinery business for over 30 years they only started making bird boxes two year ago when approached by local wildlife enthusiast John Ellicock who wanted to start a local group to encourage swifts in the Hope Valley.  The demand for specialist boxes has grown steadily since then and now boxes are being sent all over the country and even abroad.

Birdfair attracts thousands of wildlife enthusiast from all over the world to its Rutland Water site each year and is dubbed ‘The Birdwatcher’s Glastonbury”.  Lynden said :” There was certainly plenty of Glastonbury style mud this year but the presentation of the award was more of a Chelsea Flower Show moment as the judging had been done secretly and on Saturday the organisers arrived unannounced and gave us the Best Commercial Stand certificate much to our amazement .  We thought they had come back for a chat on Sunday but it was to give us the Best in Show award which was quite over whelming”.

Lester added:

” it’s been a really great experience, they said they loved our stand, our products and our ethos but most of all they loved our enthusiasm. ”

The Hartmanns were helped on the stand by their daughter Rose and Jimmi Hill from the charity Raptor Aid who was able to give expert advise on owl and kestrel boxes.
