Peregrines and Planets
The Peregrine falcon might be renowned for its breathtaking hunting stoop, but Native Americans believed this raptor lived among the sun, moon, and stars.
For its celestial powers, it’s perceived as god’s messenger.
Not so far removed then from the Ancient Egyptians who placed a Peregrine’s head on the Sun God Ra.
A Hunter or a Wanderer?
For hundreds of years man has trained the Peregrine Falcon to hunt.
Henry IV, of France owned a Peregrine Falcon.
The story goes that it once escaped, but thanks to a name tag on the bird, it was recovered, but 12 days later, over 1,300 miles away in Malta.
No surprise then that its species name, peregrinus, comes from the Latin word meaning “to wander” and true to its name, this formidable falcon wanders widely, and is found on every continent except Antarctica.
