Kestrel Box Placement

December 18, 2023

Kestrels like an open approach to their boxes, coming in low and preferring to be able to see the box from a distance.

For best results boxes should be sited 3-5 metres up fixed to the side of a tree or sitting in the junction of a branch.

It is best to position the opening away from the prevailing wind.

Attach the back plate provided to the tree with the writing against the tree then hook the box onto the back plate and attach the box to the back plate.

Kestrels have been known to inhabit disused sheds, garages, plant pots on a balcony, and hanging baskets due to their preference for locations not disturbed by humans or cars, with easy feeding options.

Therefore, if you would like to watch them, do so from afar so as not to disturb them, or install a camera when it isn't their breeding season (April - May).
