Spotting Swifts

There's something truly mesmerising about watching Swifts dart and dive through the sky with unmatched agility.

Swifts are fascinating creatures, and observing their breathtaking displays can be an exhilarating experience.

Swifts are exceptional flyers, spending most of their lives on the wing. These incredible birds are known for their distinctive scythe-like wings and their characteristic screaming calls as they navigate.

Early morning or evenings are often the best times to catch Swifts in action.

As you gaze upward, you'll be treated to their breathtaking displays of high-speed chases, intricate group formations, and incredible aerial manoeuvres.

Observe their synchronised flight patterns and listen to their distinct calls, which add to the magical ambiance of the experience.

What to do if you witness a bird crash:

Even with their honed flying skill, there are occasionally accidents.

It's important to know what to do if you come across a bird crash to ensure the bird’s well-being.

In rare instances, you may come across a Swift that has crashed or become injured.

It's important to approach such situations with care and take appropriate action:

  • A. Assess the situation: Safely approach the bird to assess its condition. If the swift is visibly injured or unable to fly, it may require assistance. Remember to prioritise the bird’s safety and only handle the bird cautiously if absolutely necessary.
  • B. Contact a local wildlife rescue or bird rehabilitation centre: Reach out to professionals who specialise in bird rescue and rehabilitation. They will provide guidance on how to proceed and may offer assistance or advice on safely transporting the injured bird to their facility.
  • C. Provide temporary shelter: If the bird is in immediate danger, such as on a busy road, you can gently place it in a ventilated box or container with a soft cloth or tissue lining. Keep the container in a warm, quiet, and dark area until you can contact the appropriate experts.
