Our Tawny Owl Box is designed to simulate natural tree cavities and provide a safe and comfortable space for breeding. With tongue and groove joints, the box offers durability against harsh weather conditions. The spacious door allows for simple maintenance and observation by a licensed expert.
The ample depth of the box keeps young Tawny owls from unintentionally leaving the nest prematurely. Our Easy Hang system allows for versatile placement either on the back or right side of the box.
All of our boxes are made by hand to order. We aim to ship all boxes in 5 to 7 days of order placement.
However, at busy times this can be up to 3 weeks due to the nature of hand finishing each product.
The exceptions to this are Apex boxes and Bespoke boxes which can take up to 4 weeks to make.
We currently only ship to addresses within the UK.
Our boxes are made from 18mm ply. Our ply is sourced from responsible plantations within Europe that plant 3 trees for each 1 that is harvested.
The ply has excellent water resistance, the surface is breathable and water vapour can move freely. This is one of the reasons why our ply will not delaminate, unlike others available. You do not need to treat the ply prior to mounting the box.
The paint used on roofs of boxes (if applicable) is a water based, heat reflective, roofing paint.
All screws used are stainless steel. We design the boxes to minimise our reliance on screws.
Detailed instructions will come with your box.
Tawny Owls like to live in and around woods. The boxes are best sited towards the edge of the wood, 3-5 metres above the ground affixed to the side of tree away from the prevailing wind. The chicks like some ground cover to protect them when they are ‘branching’ or climbing around before they fledge.
A few inches of clean soil or potting compost make a good substrate in the boxes and this should be cleaned out in the autumn.
There is no need to treat or paint the boxes prior to putting them up. If you want to paint the box, we suggest using a water-based, non-toxic paint. Please do not paint over the dark circles on swift boxes - these are visual clues to swifts that there is a nesting cavity.
We suggest inspecting the box once a year when you are very confident there are no nesting birds using it.
